I’ve had the honor of serving as a pastor of St. Luke since 1991. First as associate pastor and then in 1999 as the senior pastor. It continues to be a great journey.
I grew up in the Puget Sound area of Washington State and have had roots in the Northwest for five generations. My family has been connected to the land through logging and supplying evergreens to local florists for years. Running heavy equipment and getting mud on my boots was a thrill growing up.
But after years of learning at Pacific Lutheran University and Luther Seminary I was drawn to urban ministry and served two Lutheran churches in inner-city Brooklyn, New York. My experience there was wonderfully challenging and I developed a heart for justice and walking with the poor.
Today with my wife and three children, St. Luke has been a home where justice ministry thrives. Hands-on ministries to those in need, funding local agencies that make a difference in peoples lives; these are the signature aspects of this inclusive congregation of over 1,300 members.
Come by. Not to visit, but to find a spiritual home and a reason to give yourself away in love following a living Christ.

I am delighted to serve as Associate Pastor here with St. Luke – with emphases on education, congregational care and Confirmation.
Born and raised in various parts of the southeastern United States, I spent my formative years where Lutherans were few and far between. My family was Lutheran first because of the rich musical heritage of the Lutheran Church, then later because we as Lutherans do something better than just about anybody else: we trust in God’s grace alone – not our works, not our choice for Jesus, not our “rightness” – to save us. We are simply freed to love other people and care for this earth as a “thank you” to God’s great love for us and for the world.
I graduated from Appalachian State University, then the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, spending my internship year serving the American Church in Berlin (Germany).
Ordained in 2005, I have had the privilege now of serving congregations in each of the 4 corners of our country: Grace Lutheran Church, Johnstown, PA (Northeast); Joy of Discover Lutheran Church, Raleigh, NC (Southeast); Hope Lutheran Church, Palm Desert, CA (Southwest); and now here in lovely Portland.
Both my itinerant childhood and my experiences of Church in different regions and cultures, have stirred in me hunger to reach and welcome those who experience themselves as “outside” of community – and to build bridges between people. I love empowering and watching people grow into the people God has made them to be.
In my spare time, you’ll find me singing, working with horses, working with kids, or enjoying the beautiful outdoors.

I have served as a pastor of congregations for more than 40 years. Prior to coming to St. Luke, I served congregations in the Midwest and the national church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
My ministry serves to and with members and friends of the congregation who are pre-retired and retired. We seek opportunities for fellowship and service through St. Luke.
